Ice aprons on steep high-alpine slopes: insights from the Mont-Blanc massif, Western Alps

چکیده

Abstract Ice aprons are defined as very small ice bodies covering steep rock slopes. They have only been the subject of increased scientific interest for a few years, despite fact that they condition mountaineering and obvious elements in high-alpine landscapes. However, little is known about their distribution, evolution physical characteristics. In this paper, we review existing knowledge on aprons, which almost exclusively investigated Mont-Blanc massif, Western Alps. We supplement with novel results from recent surveys aprons. used wide array methodologies, remote sensing (multi-source imagery) to situ (stakes thermal monitoring) laboratory (radiocarbon dating texture analysis) glaciological investigations. occupy 4.2 km 2 within alpine permafrost zone. Temperature measured at ice–rock interface indeed largely negative. Thinness coupled cold context implies quasi-stationary shear regime without basal Sliding. Only surface can possibly melt warm periods. After shrinking period end Little Age mid-to-late-1960s, experienced short expansion, followed by an accelerated shrinkage since beginning 21st century. This now favours rockfall triggering poses serious threat heritage host several-thousand-year-old ice. Finally, synthesize information assess definition propose some future research directions.

Instability of a High Alpine Rock Ridge: the Lower Arête Des Cosmiques, Mont Blanc Massif, France

Rockfalls are dominant in the rock slopes and rock ridge morphodynamics in high mountain areas and endanger people who pass along or stay there, as well as infrastructure that host them (cable cars, refuges). Risks are probably greater now because of fast permafrost degradation and regression of surface ice, two consequences of the atmospheric warming of the last decades. These two commonly ass...

Antidunes on steep slopes

16 When increasing the rates of subcritical flow on gentle slopes, the bed successively produces 17 ripples, dunes and flat beds. Antidunes (defined here as all bed undulations for which the 18 surface gravity waves are in phase with the bed profile) appear only in high flow rates and 19 may be found in some extreme natural flow events. Inversely, on steep slopes flume 20 experiment (S≥1% appro...

Long-term simulations of thermal and hydraulic characteristics in a mountain massif: the Mont-Blanc case study, French and Italian Alps

The use of hydrothermal simulation models to improve the prediction of water inflows in underground works during drilling is tested in the Mont-Blanc tunnel, French and Italian Alps. The negative thermal anomaly that was observed during the drilling of this tunnel in 1960 is reproduced by long-term, transient hydrothermal simulations. Sensitivity analysis shows the great inertia of thermal phen...
